The php.ini file defines some of the operational behavior that can affect your WordPress installation.  For example, you try to upload a file but the upload fails with an error message something like "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini."  To correct this you have to modify the php.ini file at your WordPress hosting provider.  Normally this is done via the cpanel file manager, but there are other ways to do it.

Below are listed some of the common php.ini file settings that often affect the way WordPress works.

Max File Upload Size

; Maximum allowed size for uploaded files.

upload_max_filesize = 40M

; Must be greater than or equal to upload_max_filesize post_max_size = 40M

After modifying php.ini file(s), you need to restart your HTTP server to use new configuration.

See the Description of core php.ini directives.
